“I have the privilege of serving in Florida state government as the Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), an agency I’ve been a part of for 17
years. I’ve seen a lot, I’ve heard a lot, I’ve been through a lot. As the fourth-most populous state in the nation, we have enormously diverse regions of the state, all with different needs and regulatory programs that affect 18.5 million citizens’ quality of life. The majority of our DEP workforce of 3,500 gravitates to this agency out of a true passion or ‘calling’ for environmental issues, and yet those public servants can be incredibly challenged by the sometimes slow movement of bureaucracy. I asked Ray and his team at the Jorgensen Learning Center to help me fortify a Leadership Team that I already believe in, so that they would have a ‘safe space’ to share, learn, discover, empathize, brainstorm, constructively criticize, and ultimately support each other even more. I also was looking for a way to re-infuse a culture of customer service, looking to examine how we operate at the most basic levels, and to seeing how our day-to-day thinking affects that dialogue and action with our customers. Through what amounted to about 10 full days spread out over almost a year, the facilitating and exercises Ray did were superb, compelling, and a rare commodity. Many of the three dozen top leaders who went through JLC’S Executive Leadership with me have been through ‘training’ numerous times at DEP or in other jobs.
